In today's world, a challenge that parents often face is encouraging children, aged 6–15, to study STEM-related courses or subjects. It has become a very daunting task to encourage children to study STEM-related courses, mainly because children believe that they are not "into it", or have not thought of their future as yet. In such a scenario, encouraging children to plan their future and build their interests is vital. Therefore, we have devised some ways to encourage children to take STEM-related courses and realize their importance in the long-run:
- Benefits: The first and most attractive method that parents could use is to tell their children the benefits of STEM education. STEM education is incredibly important for students because it provides them with essential skills for the 21st century. Children are by nature curious human beings and if they are told that they will be learning how to design applications, running a computer or big programs, they will be bound to show their interest and look forward to beginning their STEM classes!
- Visit museums and carry out science-related activities: One or other ways that parents could build interest in their child is by visiting museums and sparking that science and technology interest in their children from an early age. Other activities that they can do together is going to science exhibitions and volunteering to have their own projects set up in science exhibitions.
- Tell them stories about other children or young adults already performing in STEM: There are many examples that parents can use to foster the interest of children in STEM. For example, Arfa Karim was a Pakistani student who became the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional in 2012. Her dedication and commitment to STEM is exemplary for other children to follow. Examples like these, especially with role models from their own community, can be very inspiring and will encourage children to lead their own pathway just like these young professionals did.
How we are helping children develop their interest is by offering free "Stem Explorer" sessions, which can be registered from here.
The free STEM Explorer session helps children to decide which courses to take, and helps them to make a better decision about their coding learning, and it keeps them hooked, thereby our free SE session can help them do that.
