Game Development with Roblox Studio

Roblox is one of the world's most popular game-creation platforms, giving young creators the tools to build, script, and publish their own games to a global audience of millions. This course introduces students to Roblox Studio, where they'll learn to design 3D environments and bring them to life using Lua, Roblox's scripting language. By the end, students will have designed, scripted, and published their own playable game on Roblox — one that friends and family can actually play.

Why take this course?

Roblox is one of the most-played platforms among kids worldwide, which makes it a rare kind of motivator: students aren't just learning to code, they're learning to build something their friends can actually play. Through a Project-Based Learning approach, students move from basic 3D building to real scripting with Lua — picking up programming fundamentals like variables, events, and conditional logic that transfer directly to other languages. Unlike many beginner coding courses, this one ends with a published, shareable game, giving students a real sense of ownership and a concrete portfolio piece.

Prerequisites:

  • Prior coding experience is optional, but comfort with basic computer use (mouse, keyboard, browsing) is expected.
  • Prior completion of Scratch Level 1 or 2 is helpful but not required — students with no block-coding background can still succeed with extra support in the first two weeks.
  • A typing speed of 15–20 Words Per Minute (WPM) is recommended, since Lua scripting involves typing code rather than drag-and-drop blocks.

Learning Outcomes

  • Navigate Roblox Studio confidently — using parts, properties, and the Toolbox to build 3D scenes.
  • Design a playable obstacle course, using platforms, gaps, and models sized to the built-in character controller's jump.
  • Set up checkpoints and spawn points with SpawnLocation, and understand how player respawning works.
  • Write basic Lua scripts — variables, events, and conditional logic.

  • Script touch- and click-based interactions, including barrier dialogue, interactive doors, and buttons.
  • Sculpt terrain and adjust lighting/sound to shape the mood of a game environment.

  • Build a leaderboard and scripted collectibles to track player progress.
  • Design a simple GUI, including on-screen text, score displays, and win/lose feedback.
  • Combine building, scripting, and UI into one complete, playable mini-game.
  • Publish a finished game to Roblox and share it with friends and family.

Learning to code helps build essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. It fosters logical reasoning, boosts confidence in using technology, and prepares children for a future increasingly shaped by digital tools.

While we highly encourage punctuality and regular attendance, we understand that emergencies can happen. In such a case, parents must inform the instructor before the class and request a recording. In this way, the instructor can arrange a recording if informed in advance, as we do not usually record classes.
