AI-Powered Web Development

Built as the next step after Intro to Web Development, this course takes students from static HTML/CSS/JS pages into full, working web applications — backend servers, real databases, terminal and package management, and live deployment — while using AI as a creative and technical partner rather than a shortcut. Starting from a simple idea, students learn to plan, prototype, build, test with real users, and deploy live projects, going well beyond the frontend fundamentals into how the web actually runs behind the scenes.

Why take this course?

This course uses a Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach centered on building small, complete, "worth visiting" web experiences rather than one enormous project. Students learn that value doesn't come from scale — a well-crafted tiny experience can matter more than an unfinished big idea. Along the way, students learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript fundamentals, how to prompt and collaborate with different AI models (and understand what each is actually good at), how to move code between tools like VS Code, Google AI Studio, and Lovable, and how to take a project from a local file to a live website using platforms like GitHub Pages, Vercel, and Render. Students also learn foundational software engineering practices — Git branching, pull requests, and collaborating on one shared codebase — plus how to run real user testing and use that feedback to improve their designs. Every student leaves with multiple live, working projects and a portfolio-ready final project of their own.

Prerequisites:

  • To maximize the benefit of this course, students must be age 10 and above or have the qualifications mentioned below.
  • Qualification of Intro to Web Development, or working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript fundamentals from another course or self-study, is recommended — this course builds directly on those basics rather than re-teaching them.
  • Some prior exposure to programming basics (loops, variables, conditions — e.g. from Scratch or a beginner coding course) is helpful if a student has not taken Intro to Web Development, as students will build these concepts further using AI tools as part of the course.
  • A typing speed of 20 Words Per Minute (WPM) is recommended, since students will be reading, prompting, and lightly editing code throughout. For practice, you can visit these websites:
  • Comfort navigating between different software windows/tabs (a code editor, a browser, a terminal, and an AI tool at the same time) is helpful, as this course involves regularly moving between multiple applications.
  • No prior design knowledge is required — students will learn to identify good and bad design practices as part of the course, through building, comparing references, and getting real feedback from user testing.

Learning Outcomes

  • Build a website from an idea to a live, deployed project, using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AI tools together — knowing when to prompt, when to write code directly, and when to debug by hand.
  • Use Git and GitHub confidently, including branching and pull requests, and collaborate with others on a single shared codebase without overwriting each other's work.
  • Explain the difference between a static frontend and a running backend, build a simple backend server connected to a real database, and deploy both a frontend and a backend live.
  • Use the terminal to navigate, run scripts, and install packages, and understand the difference between running a server locally, sharing it briefly over a tunnel, and hosting it permanently online.
  • Understand what a server is, how domain names and DNS work, and connect a real domain to a deployed website — rather than relying only on a free hosting subdomain.
  • Move a project between different AI tools and platforms (VS Code, Google AI Studio, Lovable) and adapt code written in one environment to work in another.
  • Run a basic user test on their own project, interpret the feedback, and make meaningful improvements based on it.
  • With this foundation, they will be ready to explore more advanced concepts such as backend frameworks, databases, authentication, and larger collaborative software projects.
